The Value of "Free"

How much free information should you give away on your site and how does this affect traffic?

So free they're giving it away?

Unfortunately, many sites have tried and failed to base their business models on the exclusive provision of content for free, whilst attempting to survive on advertising alone.

Even though this model continues to work well for ed-u.com and its sister site, Highstreetcentral.com, it is increasingly becoming the exception to the rule. With the down-turn in advertising rates, the majority of content-only sites on today's internet are either unprofitable or can, at best, support one or two staff within a low cost operation.

I'm free, buy me!

Free information will usually work best as a path to the sale of a real world product or real world service.

Consider giving away lots of free information as a lead up to the main item. You might, for instance, consider producing a tips section or a FAQ (frequently asked questions) section about your industry.

This will not only help establish your expertise in your given field, thereby lending credibility to your operation, but will also give visitors a reason to bookmark your site and return at a later date as a pre-qualified customer.

This free information (obviously containing your industry specific keywords and phrases) will be indexed by the search engines and found by the people specifically interested in your end product. Also, other companies that find it, may be interested in forming alliances or reciprocal links with you.

The free press

Consider linking to industry specific news that is relevant to your site. An example of an internet related newsfeed from Moreover.com is shown below:

Newsfeed Sites

  • Syndicator
  • Isyndicate
  • ScreamingMedia
  • Weather Feed
  • Surfnetkids

Note: Feeds from other sites can significantly slow down the loading of your pages. You should test all feeds for speed over a 24-hour period before publishing.

Free content for e-zines and web-sites

Please check at each site for varying rules concerning articles and as to whether articles are still offered for free before you publish them.

  • Certificate.net
  • Ezinearticles.com
  • Ideamarketers.com
  • Infobot.net
  • List-content.com
  • List-resources.com
  • Mediapeak.com
  • Web-source.net

Free occasionally comes with a price

Beware if you take your free information from other web-sites (i.e. not newsfeed sites)...

Some companies bring up pages within frames on their sites and these framed pages sometimes do not carry the advertising which is the main source of revenue for their operation. For example, the advertising might be placed in a frame to the side of or above the framed content.

If you link directly to the web address of these framed content pages the advertising in the intended surrounding frames will not appear. Also, these sites often do not carry hyper-links on the framed content pages, in affect disabling visitors who arrive at these now un-framed pages from progressing through the site.

This will deprive the owner of revenue and could open you up to accusations of illegal financial benefit from their site.

This is especially true where linking is extensive and even more so if you frame their content within your site. Many high traffic sites have to pay for additional bandwidth (flow of data) and you could be directly adding to their costs. These costs can be interpreted as damages. If in doubt, ask permission or only link to their home page.

We welcome all kinds of linking, in fact we would be delighted if you framed any of ed-u.com pages. You don't even have to let us know. Maybe you could use something like "Yoursite.com presents ed-u.com - The Education Mega-Site!" as the tag-line. Please visit the Active Online Pupil Forums to see an example of how we have linked to Pupiline.net.
